anyone knowing these pink blobs on rabbit dung?
Andreas Gminder, 22-02-2012 20:48
Andreas GminderDear collegues,

when starting moist chamber cultures of dung samples, I ave come across the shown pinkish blobs several times. They look like a myxomycete, but produce hyaline ellitpical conidia. I have not seen any other structures (like conidiophores, hyphae etc.).

Anyone knowing what this is? Meanwhile the question arose in an english and in a german forum, but noone seems to know this species, though all admit that it is very common ....

best regards,
Andreas

Hi Andreas

you don't have any micros of these conidia? Is the conidial mass surrounded by a membrane? Is there a stipe-like base and what is its structure?, is it cellular?

Hi Andreas
What is the size of the structures?
Could be Myxobacteria, some species are coprophilous

Hello Andreas,

can you exclude Stilbella erythrocephala? Sometimes it has only very short stalks.

Hello Hermine, Jean-Pierre and Zotto,

I can not tell much to this, as I have it not in culture at the moment. This is a picture from a friend from an english forum, where the question arose. And as I remember having found this "whatever" regularily on my dung samples in moist chamber, I too would like to know what it is.
Here is a picture of the conidia (?) - equaly not from me.

Stilbella erythrocephala is a good hint - looks very promising! Thanks Hermine :-))

best regards,
Andreas

edit: forgot to upload the foto ....

Re : anyone knowing these pink blobs on rabbit dung?
I've seen things very similar to this mostly on goat dung from Maine in the USA.  I remember it being more orange though.  I wonder if they are sporodochia of some sort, and if so are the condia in chains?  I've been curious about this too but haven't seen it in some time.
