Possibly Helotiaceae? White/Off-white discomycete
Ethan Crenson, 29-01-2024 18:16
Hello,

Can anyone help ID this discomycete. White recepticle, with off-white hymenium.

Spores:
Hyaline, with one or two guttules, small, broadly ellipsoid, but in some cases fusiform, longer spores occasionally allantoid.

2.6-4.4 x 1.3-1.8µm
Me: 3.3 x 1.5µm

Asci:
8 spored, IKI+, biseriate, with croziers
30-33 x 4.7-5.0µm

Ectal excipulum hairs: 2.2-2.6µm wide, encrusted with yellowish refractive lumps.

Medullary excipulum, textura globosa to angularis

Paraphyses 1.8µm wide, cylindrical.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ethan

This looks much like Hyphodiscus smaragdinus (earlier Hyphodiscus viridipilosus). Known ?only from Europe.

Thank you, Zotto!  Another Hyphodiscus!  I seem to find them quite a bit.  I wish I had more material or I would attempt to sequence it.

A European sequence exists but it does not seem to be in GenBank.

Re : Possibly Helotiaceae? White/Off-white discomycete
This appears to be the third species of Hyphodiscus that I have collected in the NYC metropolitan area. Hyphodiscus hymeniophilus in Great Swamp, New Jersey and Hyphodiscus theiodeus on a stick I had brought home from somewhere and left for months in my backyard. I feel I should be able to at least recognize the characteristics that define the genus, but obviously I'm not there yet.

Re : Possibly Helotiaceae? White/Off-white discomycete
Definition of the genus is not that easy, as often in taxonomy. In summary: Short stipes, warted (often tuberculate) hairs, small ellipsoid to fusoid spores, gelatinised ectal excipulum.

Do you know the paper by Quijada et al. on Hyphodiscaceae? It gives a generic diagnosis and a key to species.

Thank you for the synopsis of the genus!  I have the Quijada paper and will study it.
