Diaporthe spiculosa?

I found a Diaporthe species on Sambucus nigra that I currently suspect to be Diaporthe spiculosa. I would greatly appreciate any opinions or confirmation regarding this identification.

Looks like Diaporthe. It seems to me what I would call Diaporthe circumscripta (as in Ellis and Ellis). I was not aware of the name D. spiculosa. Curiously Diaporthe circumscripta is listed some places (eg. Bladmineerders) as synonym to Aglaospora profusa (Pleosporales !!!), but not by Index Fungorum, which has Aglaospora profusa by the current name Massaria anomia. I have no idea what the correct name should be or whether D. spiculosa and D. circumscripta are the same thing or different species.

Hi both.
This is what I identified years ago as Diaporthe spiculosa on Sambucus nigra. The spores appear to be larger than those cited for Diaporthe circumscripta.

Wehmeyer (p.261) seem to consider D.spiculosa synonymous with D. circumscripta. His sporemeasures are: 12-15 x 2,5-4. See:

However, Wehmeyer (The Genus Diaporthe) considers Diaporthe spiculosa to be a priority. Basyonim. Spaheria spiculosa Alb. & Schwein.

Hi Enrique,

I guess you are rigth, but I'm not into the finer details of taxonomy :-) Hypoxylon spiculosum (1857) -> Diaporthe spiculosa (1870) (the name Spaheria spiculosa(1805) is listed as nom. illegit.) seems to beat Diaporthe circumscripta (1870) . Of course this asumes that the are the same species...would require DNA to be certain, I guess, as Diaporthe species differ very little in morphology.

thanks a lot to both of you for the helpful input.

Based on your comments (and Wehmeyer's treatment), I'm happy to keep this collection under Diaporthe spiculosa (= D. circumscripta sensu Wehmeyer) on Sambucus nigra. I agree that morphology alone has its limits in Diaporthe, so I've kept the specimen in case sequencing can be done later to confirm the determination.
