Hysterioid on Picea

Yesterday I found some hysterioid fungi growing on the inner side of loosened bark attached to a dead, standing Picea abies trunk.

Asci bitunicate and 8-spored, spores brown and 4-celled, measuring:

18.6 - 22.9 × 6.0 - 7.5 µm, Q = 2.7 - 3.4; avg = 21.1 × 6.8 µm, Qav = 3.1, n = 5


This keyed out to Hysterium acuminatum, but that species is supposed to grow on deciduous wood.


Any thoughts what this might be?

Hi Juuso,

I'm interested to know what key you are using that arrives at H. acuminatum. Using Boehm's key I get to Hysterium angustatum. The spores do fall within the range, though looking at your images, some of them seem to be a bit broad. The Boehm key says "Phragmospores (12-) 14-21 (-28) x (3-)4-8(-10)µm, firmly 3 septate, no septal constrictions, end cells obtuse, cosmopolitan."   I don't find H. angustatum on Picea, but we don't have much spruce around here to begin with.

Hi Juuso, without comparing too thoroughly this should be the common resinicolous Mytilinidion that appeared here several times. I think you also had it in the past.

Hi Ethan,

I used the "Key to hysterioid fungi on bark and wood in Scandinavia" (found on Researchgate) as a key. I just read a little from the book Fungi of Temperate Europe (vol. 2), and it says about H. acuminatum that it is "Also knowns as H. angustatum".

Hi Adam,

yes, you could be right -- this could indeed be that same undescribed species. Since this wasn't growing on resin, this didn't occur to me earlier.

Mytilinidion would make more sense on Picea. The macro photos look a lot like a Hysterium, not so much like a bivalve.  Very interesting.
