Hymenoscyphus look like?
Rot Bojan, 23-12-2024 18:18
Hello!
I've been working with this small fungus for a few days now, but I can't find any significant microscopic features (or I can't see them). I don't know why, the fungus is immature, or..? Please help!
A fungus up to 2 mm in size, growing on a bare log, possibly an acacia.

Re : Hymenoscyphus look like?
Hi,

Ascus form and paraphyse guttulation may be OK for Hymenoscyphus. But with the outer surfave being pro parte composed of isodiametric cells and the non-scutuloid spores I would exclude Hymenoscyphus ss. str. The photos are not very informative and no description of the microscopy (IKI reaction of ascal apex, prsence or absence of basal croziers, dimensions and guttulation of fresh spores...) was added.

Regards,

Bernard

Re : Hymenoscyphus look like?
Bernard thanks for fast answer.
There was no visible reaction with IKI, basal croziers, they are not present, or maybe I didn't find them.I don't know if the fungus is immature because I didn't find any free spores either. Usually I can find all these elements without any problems, this time I couldn't and I don't understand why?

Re : Hymenoscyphus look like?
What is your predominat mounting medium here? I see only one photo in water with living elements, from which I see that the paraphyses are without VBs (but the reddening of the apos made me think of a species with VBs). Why did you photograph only mounts in lethal media?

I see no IKI photo. If inamyloid I would not be sure with Hymenoscyphus, although the macro suggests it.

Re : Hymenoscyphus look like?
Hello Zoto!
I tried all the media, mainly because I didn't notice anything familiar? IKI, KONGO RED, MELTZER, KOH, WATER. Should I try water again? The problem is that the fungus is relatively hard.
Thanks for the answer and the tips.

Re : Hymenoscyphus look like?
Made only in water. Please give your opinion!
Maybe not mature enough, rare asci?

Re : Hymenoscyphus look like?
I am sorry, now all is dead and overmature. The general shape of this find is too bad, the apos were senescent probably when collected. Only your pic 17 is fine, with living paraphyses etc.

Re : Hymenoscyphus look like?
It's true, even frozen in between, it will need to be repeated when the new ones grow. Thanks for the answers and comments. Best regards!
