Hi, I found these black cup fungi on recently broken hardwood branches from Acer saccharum.They look very similar to Bulgariella pulla, but Adam Polhorsky pointed out that they lacking VBs in paraphyses and the habitat is very unusual. Branches probably were attached to the trees and they were broken by recent winter storm. I'm hoping that someone has suggestion what else it could be.

Apothecia with smooth margin, 1-2mm in diameter, erumpent, stipitate.
Asci 8-spored, IKI-, uniseriate, ?croziers(-), 91-128x13-16um.
Ascospores ellipsoid, aseptate, brown, multiguttulate, measured
*(12) 12.4 - 14.6 (15.6) × (7.3) 7.8 - 8.7 (9.2) µm
Q = (1.4) 1.5 - 1.79 (1.8) ; N = 22
Me = 13.4 × 8.3 µm ; Qe = 1.6
Paraphyses cylindrical with slightly pigmented walls at the apex, without guttules. Meddulary excipulum with crystals.

Re : Bulgariella pulla -like
Hi Igor
interesting! I agree it is not B. pulla as we know this species. I can clearly see croziers on your left photo. What I would try to clarify: are the immature dead asci with apical wall thickening?
What I see from Guy's collections, B. pulla is a drought-tolerant fungus too.
No idea about a name.

Re : Bulgariella pulla -like
Yes, so the min difference is the VBs.
