Calycellina?
Ethan Crenson, 10-11-2023 07:01
Hello,

Today in a Brooklyn, NY cemetery on an oak leaf I found a small cluster of minute white cups with hairs at the margin. My first thought was Hyaloscypha, but the microscopy seems to suggest otherwise. I am wondering if this is Calycellina.

Apothecia smaller than 1mm in diameter growing on Quercus leaf (I think).

Asci 4-spored, IKI+, clavate, 32-37 x 5.2-6.0µm

Spores fusiform, usually with one acute end and on rounded end, somewhat curved, 9.5-15.1 x 2.2-2.9µm

Paraphyses septate with oil content. Dextrinoid in Lugol's.

Excipulum textura globulosa / intricata. Cells are often trapezoidal.

Hairs? Not sure.

Am I on the right track with Calycellina?

Thanks,

Ethan

Re : Calycellina?
Yes, this is Calycellina lachnobrachya. One of my old papers deals with 4-spored Calycellinas. Regretabbly, both this and araneocincta are so far unsequenced, only ulmariae and flaveola are.

Re : Calycellina?
Thank you again! I don't have much material left over, but I will try to sequence this collection if I can.

Was the paper you wrote on 4-spored Calycellinas is in Czech Mycology or Zeitschrift für Mykologie? I am trying to find it online.

A very interesting asco.  I don't think I have seen an IKI reaction like that at the ends of the paraphyses.

Re : Calycellina?
I think the reference I'm looking for is this:

Baral, H.O. (1989). Beiträge zur Taxonomie der Discomyceten II. Die Calycellina-Arten mit 4sporigen Asci. – Beitr. Kenntn. Pilze Mitteleuropas 5: 209–236.

I can't seem to find it online. Do you know where it is available?

I sent it to you by mail.

Re : Calycellina?
Thank you for the paper.

I have managed to get a fairly decent sequence from this collection.  If you visit:

...there is an observational field for DNA Barcode ITS in the right column where I have added the results.
