White discomycete on Alnus wood
Stefan Jakobsson, 21-01-2023 00:10
On a dead branch attached to a standing Alnus (?)glutinosa there were some 0.3-0.5 mm wide white apos on decorticared wood. The margin and flanks are covered with smooth more or less uncinate hairs. The spores are 5.7-8.5 × 2.1-2.7 µm and the asci 41-50 × 5.8-7.0 µm. Asci seem to have croziers and the iodine reaction is negtive also after KOH pretreatment. The paraphyses have a long VB in the apical cell.

I tried to match this with e.g. Calycina hyalinula but the hairs don't fit in. The temperature in southern Finland had been mostly above freezing point for a week when this was collected yesterday. Are there better suggestions?

Re : White discomycete on Alnus wood
perhaps have a look in the genus Hmatocanthoscypha?
Best regards, Lothar

Re : White discomycete on Alnus wood
The hairs, of course, bring Hamatocanthoscypha to mind. But VBs in Hamatocanthoscypha? I found nothing suitable on hardwood.

Re : White discomycete on Alnus wood
you are right, I overlooked the vacuolar bodies. Then Calycellina perhaps ?

Re : White discomycete on Alnus wood
I was also thinking about the VBs but I believe Hamatocanthoscypha is a good choice. What about H. straminella? Look in my folder, it is IKI-, but I thought it should be yellow. For sulphureocintina this is so and also straminella was described as "straminea vel subaurea".

Re : White discomycete on Alnus wood
At least last time I collected H. straminella on Alnus three years ago it was very clearly yellow. Then it was growing under a piece of wood against the ground in darkness, so the lack of light does not explain the difference.

Re : White discomycete on Alnus wood
Ah you know it, and it was inamyloid, yes? The hairs contain here distinctly rfefractive VBs, not yellow, but I suppose the yellow VBs in the paraphyses were also refractive.

Surely this is something very similar.
Stefan Jakobsson, 21-01-2023 21:44
Re : White discomycete on Alnus wood
It was inamyloid but probably I did not test with pretreatment. Unfortunately I did not save the photos, but the notes say that hairs and paraphyses were more clearly yellow under the microscope than what the photos show.

Re : White discomycete on Alnus wood
If you use Lugol you must not pretreat with KOH.

Re : White discomycete on Alnus wood
Always lugol!
