Sub-millmeter whitish apothecia on subalpine humus
Edvin Johannesen, 02-09-2021 13:49

These tiny apothecia (less than 1 mm) were found in a moist depression under Salix in a mountain region in Central Norway. The substrate is nearly-decomposed plant material.  The macro photos are of fresh specimen. Unfortunately, it took som time (in the fridge) before I was able to do microscopy, so deliquescence has started. I was however able to find mature asci and spores (photos in water). Spores measure typically 11x4 microns. Multiple guttules (or spore bodies?) are seen towards the poles. Asci IKI- as far as I can see. Is it possible to ID (at least to genus) from this limited information?

Thanks.

That's an interesting proposal, Mirek. A genus I have not encountered before. I will check further. Sad to say, the specimen is now in a poor condition.  Thanks!

LBs are for sure in the spores (you can test it with KOH, they resist). But how are the paraphyses? are they still alive and do they contain VBs?

Re : Sub-millmeter whitish apothecia on subalpine humus
Thanks, Zotto.  I was happy to find one apo apparently in good shape, and have studied it in water, KOH and Lugol. Some additional/corrected information.

1. The spore LBs resist KOH

2. Paraphyses contain VBs. These disappear in KOH and the paraphyses also become thinner in KOH.

3. Asci vary in being uni- or biseriate. Also the number of spores seem to vary, the normal being 8 (uni- or bi). In some asci the spores spread througout the asci, in other they tend to aggregate towards the apex.

4. Ascus apparatus is hemiamyloid (brownish in Lugol).

New photos are all in water (except the last one, in Lugol). I had to use phase contrast to get a clear image of the paraphyse VBs.

Does this help?

Interesting! Could be a Pezoloma indeed. But I see no VBs. Your phase photo seems to refer to dead paraphyses. In water under bright field there are no apparent contents.

Hi
In fact ascomata already heavily damaged but I think the pictures show the contents paraphyses.
I allowed Edvin's photo correction.
