Tiny star on Picea cone
Juuso Äikäs, 23-03-2021 20:33
I noticed this weird little star-shaped thing last fall on a fallen Picea abies cone. Something similar seems to be on the post that Alain just added (first pic).

When I tried to remove it with tweezers, it just popped like a blister. I'm not at all certain that this is a fungus, but it also doesn't remind me of anything else. Or could this be something plant or insect related?

Hi Juuso,

I am happy that this ''thing''appears here though it is not a fungus but I do hope that an Ascofrance member will give a name for it or the adress of some specialist to contact.

I did find it several times and never could get a clue for it ( something then of a ''cold case'' for me)

I join some pics , including after extraction of the ? animal.

Amitiés. Michel

Thanks for the reply and great pics! The extraction pic is quite interesting -- it goes surprisingly deep. I thought it would be just a superficial disc.

Our taxidermist here at TUR suggested that this could be (a remnant of) an egg of an arthropod. Heteroptera maybe.

Re : Tiny star on Picea cone
Bonjour,

On progresse ! Je t'envoie des photos Alain

AMitiés. Michel
