Gray discos on Larix
Juuso Äikäs, 17-03-2021 18:40
Here's a finding from yesterday. The substrate is a fairly fresh branch of Larix sp. that had fallen on the snow.

Asci 8-spored, without croziers, IKI negative. Paraphyses with a swollen tip and a VB. The spores measure 10.4 - 12.1 × 4.4 - 5.1 microns.

Any clue what this is?

Maybe these are outer hairs? Ciliolarina?

Hyphodiscus? ---just based on the general appearance / also swollen paraphyse apex maybe ok. Would you describe excipulum as gelatinized?

Hyphodiscus never has VBs. All data speak for Ciliolarina pinicola in my opinion (by memory).

Spores get 1-septate when overmature. Inside the turgescent ascis they must be non-septate.

Thanks for the answers!
I checked C. pinicola and it does seem to fit very well.
