Joop van der LeeNormally Pilobolus are found on horse dung but this one was on cow dung.

Immature species start with a dark yellow sporangium later changing to a combination of olive-green with a black top.

The top of the cap of the sporangium is solid black when young but it will develope a pattern when mature.

The olive-green underbelly of the sporangium containing the sporangiospores will retract into the cap and the underside will fold itself to hold the spores.

Spores are oval and measure 13.8-14.3x9.0-9.5 um

Leuke vondst. 
Net als Malcolm Creaves denk ik dat het Pilobolus kleinii is. Deze soort is eerder door mij ook in Schinveld gevonden op mest van Schotse Hooglanders en in Eijsden op mest van Galoway runderen. En ook Riet van Oosten heeft deze soort recent gevonden. 
Deze vondsten zijn o.a. gedetermineerd met behulp van de determinatiesleutel van Malcom Greaves, die deze determinaties eerder ook heeft bevestigd.

Hello Malcolm,

I will have a look at previous findings from a few years back.
The pattern on top of the cap has not drawn my attention so far so I will check if it was there before.
So far the development of the spores collected in the lower olive-green part of the sporangium and retracting in the cap which was then closed by a folding cap bottom was surprising to see.
I did not see the folding with P. oedipus but the olive-green part was thicker in this case as you can see on the photo compared with photo no 4 of this topic.

Hello Malcolm,

This is what is looks like in different angles on mature sporangia instead of just the pattern on immature sporangia like the one above.

This partitular patterns is mentioned in Researches on fungi volume VI, page 185/186 but related to P. crystallinus and that is not the case for this species according to the spore size of P. kleinii.
P. kleinii has another pattern as showed on page 187
Futhermore they wrote that the pattern developes on discharged sporangia as they dry up and flatten down, but these sporangia were still connected to their sporangiophore.

By the way this is what I photographed yesterday investigating P. oedipus.

I accidently removed the sporangium from the sporangiophore without damaging the latter and so exposing the columella of the sporangiophore.
