Durella-like disco from the USA
Django Grootmyers, 18-05-2019 21:17
Django GrootmyersHello, I have been having trouble identifying this discomycete.

Growing on a hardwood stick with Ionomidotis fulvotingens. Apothecia superficial on a black subiculum. Releasing a purple pigment in Melzer's reagent when pretreated with 1M KOH and not without. All structures inamyloid. Ectal excipulum of textura angularis and composed of irregularly-shaped brownish cells. Paraphyses filiform and branched. Asci 8-spored, inoperculate, unitunicate and clavate. Asci with croziers. Asci measurements: (26.7) 26.74 – 36.37 (36.4) × 4.1 – 5.29 (5.3) µm, Q = 5.1 – 7.47 (7.5); N = 4, Me = 30.4 × 4.7 µm; Qe = 6.5. Spores smooth, hyaline, non-septate and biguttulate. Spore measurements from Piximetre: (4.2) 4.5 – 5.3 (5.8) × (1.6) 1.7 – 2.1 (2.3) µm, Q = (2.1) 2.2 – 3.1 (3.2); N = 20, Me = 4.9 × 1.9 µm; Qe = 2.6

When the excipulum is a t. angularis then it cannot be a Durella, though it looks a bit so.

The pigment release is in MLZ, not in KOH?

Sorry, when the elements are all mounted in MLZ, I cannot identify. Could you please make mounts in water? Without pressure on the cover slip?

Hello Zotto,

I added images of mounts in distilled water and 1M KOH to the link I previously posted. I was unable to show the water mount uncrushed due to the difficulty in sectioning such small apothecia by hand. It appears that the purple coloration is also present in distilled water and is due to a substance on the paraphyses. This purple coloration is lacking in the 1M KOH mounts.

On your pic 9351 it seems that the ectal excipulum is of angular texture and heavily incrusted with brown exudate. It could be that the fungus is ionomidotic, i.e. the brown pigment extrudes in the medium when KOH reaches the apothecium, but since this colour turns greyish in KOH, I more consider the absence of that reaction.

In any case it cannot be a Durella.

I should mention that the pictures of the ectal excipulum are not from transverse sections. I do not have a dissecting microscope or a microtome so these photos are from entire apothecia squash mounted.
