"Elaphocordyceps on beetle larvae on Fraxinus bark, southern Denmark, Europe
Thomas Læssøe, 25-08-2016 16:58
In the season 2015 (august) I found a tiny almost pustular fluffy fungus on bark of Fraxinus. With the handlens I discovered small yellowish penetrating perithecia and microscopical examination confirmed its clavicipitalean nature. Initially I thought it was a Neobarya on some other fungus and only after having had the material back from Jens H. Petersen who did the macrophotography did I discover tiny flat beetle larvae hidden in the bark (possible Elateridae). Some characters point towards "Elaphocordyceps subsessilis" but I wonder whether the community can offer better solutions?
cheers

Thomas

Elaphocordyceps subsessilis would have a very characteristic anamorph. If you do not have the facilities to grow it, I would be pleased to try.
Best wishes   Walter

Re : "Elaphocordyceps on beetle larvae on Fraxinus bark, southern Denmark, Europe
it was collected during a very intensive field survey where I had to cover 5-10 1600 m2 plots pr day so I only by chance got to deliver the fresh material to JHP for macro-photography. I got i back in dried condition (aug. 2015). But thanks for the offer.

Nevertheless it is still worth trying, unless it has been heated or poisoned.  w.
