Cryptodiscus species ?
Aafke Buijs, 24-09-2015 12:47
Hi,

On deteriorated wood of broadleaves (Craetagus, Populus, Sambucus) found these small orange apothecia, that at first sight looked like a nectria.
Under the lens it seemed a Stictis but then under the microscope it showed large, seven septated spores, pointed at the ends, the middle fragments somewhat thickened.
Spores measured about 65 mu and the asci about 132 mu.
Apothecia partially sunken in the substrate, whitish bulb surrounded by an orange layer.

I would appreciate your help.

Greetings, Aafke

Re : Cryptodiscus species ?
Hi Aafke,

this could be Pseudotrichia viburnicola. Can you give a closer look on the fruitbodies?
I would expect some more granular content in the spores.

Regards
Martin

Re : Cryptodiscus species ?
Hi Martin,

More pictures coming up soon.
For the moment, thank you for your suggestion. Pseudotrichia viburnicola looks like a good candidate !
Do you know were I could find a description of this species ?

...... and the rest of the series of pictures, as promised.
Pseudotrichia viburnicola fits well.

Re : Cryptodiscus species ?
Thanks Aafke! Now the spore content looks more familiar to me.
Is the first of the new pictures just in water, or did you add KOH?
What kind of iodine did you use, Melzer's or Lugol?

Regards
Martin

Re : Cryptodiscus species ?
I used KOH for the first picture and Melzer's as iodine.

Re : Cryptodiscus species ?
Again thanks,

I suspected the use of KOH since I can't remember of such purple pigments in previous collections, interesting!
