Nectrioid on Laurus
Ibai Olariaga Ibarguren, 30-01-2015 21:52
Hello,

I am wondering whether someone could give a clue of what this nectrioid fungus is. We found it in a warm and hyperoceanic area in the Basque area on a Laurus branch. It is growing on a kind of subiculum made up of algae. I don´t have much literature at hand to identify it. Perithecia 0.2 mm in diam, dark reddish brown. Perithecial wall 18-25 µm thick, 3-4 µm. KOH=0. Spores fusiform, straight to curved, 3-septate, 23-27 x 4-4.5 µm, filled with small refringent colourless guttules. Asci 63 x 10 µm, with apical pore.

The negative KOH reaction excluded Nectriaceae, probably a Bionectriaceae, any ideas? Thank you in advance!

Ibai.

Re : Nectrioid on Laurus

Hi,

With the key of Bionectriaceae, we should say that is a Nectriella species. But with such ascospores, it's impossible (all species have 0 - 1 septate ascospores).

So ???

Hi Ibai,
are you sure that the asci are unitunicate?

Like Christian, I'm not sure that it is a Bionectriaceae.

Re : Nectrioid on Laurus

Hi Alain and Christian,

Thank you for your answers. Yes, I thought that asci were unitunicate with an inconspicuous pore at the apex, but I will check it again and try to get better photos. It will take a couple of weeks until I am back home though. Sorry for that.

Cheers,

Ibai.

Hello Ibai,
lookig at your fotos and description, I would say it is a lichen, a Porina, perhaps P. leptalea

Re : Nectrioid on Laurus

Hi Javier,

Thanks for the tip. I will check that option - it looks the right one. I thought the asci were unitunicate and I excluded lichenized fungi, although I saw a clear thallus with algae. If it happens to be P. leptalea, I see that you reported in from Gipuzkoa a long time ago.

Cheers,

Ibai.

Re : Nectrioid on Laurus

Yes, Javier has found the good solution. Perhaps see also Porina arnoldii.

P. leptalea : hemisphaerical perithecias, ascospores 16-23 x 3-6 µm

P. arnoldii : ovoidal perithecias, ascospores 22-28 x 3-5 µm.
