Hyaloxyz on Caragana
Marja Pennanen, 10-04-2011 22:39
Hello,

i found some whitish hairy ascomycetes on Caragana arborescens today,
They are about 0,3 mm wide.

Re:Hyaloxyz on Caragana
I've spent hours microscoping them and only got my shoulder in pain.

The spores are about 8-10x2-3, with some droplets and they seems to be flattened.
I took some light colors off the photo.

Re:Hyaloxyz on Caragana
The asci are about 30-50x5-6 and paraphyses 1.5-2 wide.
Heres a wider view to the microscophy.

There are some hairs, which resemble those of Hyaloscyphas

Re:Hyaloxyz on Caragana
Some have very narrow tips. Hairs are 10-40x 3-5.

Could there represent some Hyalacrotes?

It seems a Hyaloscypha but more I cannot say.

Re:Hyaloxyz on Caragana
Hi Zotto,

you might be right.
On the other hand I've found lots of Hyaloscyphas and still this seems odd to me ;)
Maybe I've just forgotten much during the winter.

Seppo will propably get this specimen on his table sooner or later, but getting an aswer from him will take some time...

Re:Hyaloxyz on Caragana
Hi again,

still wondering. The spores looked like elongated pancakes and were sometimes bent from the side view (see above 15-18 in the spore photo).
I just can't remember seeing that with Hyaloscyphas, maybe I'm getting demented. Have I looked poorly and is this typical for Hyaloscyphas? Can the spores be dead? Didn't look like that...

Curiously: Marja

I don't understand which spore you mean, but those on the second pic look dead to the major part, yes.

Re:Hyaloxyz on Caragana
Hi,

the spores must be dead. I figured that after all. The spores must have frozen and the liquid inside has broken the walls. But I'd surely like to find ascos with spores like pancakes ;)
