Ciboria spec. on ?soil
Björn Wergen, 02-11-2010 18:51
Björn WergenHello,

during my last expedition in the "Nationalpark Eifel", Germany, I found something interesting, just one fruitbody which looks like a Ciboria-species, but I am not sure if it is. With Medardi-Key (Ascomiteci d'Italia) it goes up to a "Ciboria polygoni-vivipari", which grows on soil and between mosses. Also spores are very similar...but I have no further literatur for it and that is the reason I am asking here ;) as always ^^

Fruitbody about 3-12 mm, cupulate with a short stalk, grey-brown to ochraceous, similar to Ciboria amentacea.
Spores 12,5 - 15 x 4-4,5, ellipsoid, smooth, with 2-3 bigger guttules and several smaller ones (OCI: 4-5). Asci with 8 spores. Paraphyses filiform, no swollen apex, without remarkable guttules.
I am sorry for bad description, I hadn't any chemical utilities when I found this "Ciboria", now I have some ;)

Well the fruitbody seems to grow on wet soil between mosses, I checked it out but I didn't found any plant debris...

Is it a Ciboria? Or perhaps something near Ciboria? Like Ciborinia? I checked my database but it didn't help :(

thanks for help,
cheers, Kazuya

Dear Kazuya,

we had already a discussion about this species: It is Discinella boudieri, and Geogoryne variispora is something very similar.

Hope you can check some features: Ascus reactio in Lugol (without KOH) should be pale or bright red at the apex. The apothecium should be gelatinous. Try a section, the excipulum is not a globulosa as in Ciboria, but a porrecta, externally covered by much gel.

C. polygoni-vivipari grows on seeds, and I saw this species recently in Lapland.

Could you please tell me the exact locality and datw when you found it?

Here you see the difference: above: Ciboria polyg.-viv., below: D. boudieri.

Thanks

Zotto

Re:Ciboria spec. on ?soil
Hi Zotto,

Kazuya
