Sordariomycete (?) on Salix
Nick Aplin,

I'm having trouble placing this species I found growing on a well-rotten, partly decorticated Salix branch (still attached to the tree) in the South of England on 3/1/16:
The small ascoma were quite soft, and the substrate crumbling so handling was quite difficult - Apologies for the poor photographs, I'll try to supply an adequate desription to make up for them:
Ascoma immersed in some dark tissue (seemingly an old pyrenomycete) with only hyaline, +/- hairy ostioles visible. Light brown below surface of substrate, soft.
Ascospores 16.2-21.8 x 5.8-7 µm, minutely roughened, uniseriate, seemingly aseptate at discharge (?) then developing up to 3 septa. Some budding ascoconidia after discharge.
Asci with apical ring visible in water and staining in Congo Red, IKI -
The ascoma were surrounded by dark conidiophores - I'm unsure whether these are related?(photo included)
I'd be quite suprised to get this one to species level, but if anyone has any ideas where it belongs (I have no idea on even the family) they would be much appreciated!
I have a small dried collection if anyone here is brave enough to take it on....
Amitiés,
Nick

The conidium in your third image looks like Endophragmiella boothii. I can't help with the teleomorph I'm afraid!

Re : Sordariomycete (?) on Salix
Hi Nick
not that it will help much but I would say the conidium is that of Endophragmiella boothii (see http://www.ascofrance.com/search_recolte/3063), and is just a chance companion as it were - I have, as an example, seen it accompanying my two finds of Orbilia rubrovacuolata:Â http://www.ascofrance.com/search_forum/32177
best wishes
Chris
Hah! Marcus beat me to it :) - at least we agree!!

Re : Sordariomycete (?) on Salix
Thanks Marcus & Chris, that looks good.
I vaguely remember seeing this anamorph a few times before, but I couldn't remember the name. Surely not related to the teleomorph then.
