Orbilia on Sambucus
Marja Pennanen, 09-04-2012 18:43
Hello,

these about 0,2 mm wide Orbilias have spores about 7-8x2 and asci are about 30-40x4.
Paraphyses have swollen heads.

When the preparate was made, a little piece of wood came with the Orbilia.
I found an anamorph swimming besides the wood.
I suppose it is a Tridentaria (or Trinacrium???) and may be connected to this Orbilia.

Dear Marja

suppose you have Orbilia vitalbae. What kind of Sambucus you have? woody or ebulus? The conidia are a bit narrower in our illustations.  -- Zotto

Re : Orbilia on Sambucus
Dear Zotto,

thank you very much!
Ooh, yes, I'm happy, a new species for me and propably for Finland, too.

This Sambucus, propably Sambucus racemosa is just a bush, kind of a small (2 m) tree and so woody.

By the way the spores look absolutely amazing. It is a pitty, that I can't see all those fine details with my microscope.

Re : Orbilia on Sambucus
For completeness please tell  me the collection data. And: is the core texture of the branch white or reddish? This is a difference between racemosa and nigra.

Re : Orbilia on Sambucus
Hi Zotto,

I collected this on 4.4. 2012 in Outokumpu, at Mökkivaara, ETRS89: 62.72533, 28.99431 (near my home).

The core of the branch is not white, maybe a bit pinkish. I do not know bushes very well, thank you for that piece of information.

Re : Orbilia on Sambucus
I checked Sambucus from internet. The substrate must be Sambucus racemosa because S. nigra does not grow wild? up here.  Birds eat berries and spread the bush.

yes, and it is the reddish inner texture which is typical of racemosa
