Lepista ZacariasDear all,I would like to have more opinions about
in advance, please excuse for my lack in foreign languages, i'll try it in english -
it is also my first post here in the community, so please do not be too strict with me...
Two weeks ago I found this Scutellinia, but I cannot assign it to one species.
I always have problems with the keys, this time they lead me, as so often, into nothingness.
Maybe someone has any idea how to determine this species better?
Usually i write my amateur documentation in German, but here is a brief summary:
Apothecien/Apothecia: 5–10 (15) mm, probably on argillaceous soil, not on wood
Asci: 200 x21 ?m, short-stalked
Paraphysen/Paraphyses: nearly of the length of the asci, upper third always free of dyes
Haare/Hair: mainly rooted, maximum length 800 ?m, near base 30-45 ?m wide.
Sporen/Spores 19–21(22)x(12)13–14(15) ?m, Ornamentation not visible in water, but clearly
in cotton blue or Phloxin-B - please see attached PDF with pictures.
There's a link to my (incomplete, i still have to add the results of my tries with the keys) documentation (PDF, 3 MB):
http://taunuspilz.de/coppermine/albums/ftp_ul/_temp/2014_06_14_Scutellinia_65.pdf
Does anyone have ideas or hints?
These Scutellinia make me crazy...
Cordialement et merci d'avance
Klaas
Scutellinia crinita could be a good candidate.
i agree to nicolas - some hairs on the left picture are definetely longer than 800! are you sure you have one species? the apos on the right picture show much more dense and regular hairs (in length) than the sparse crinita-like one on the left!
also the ornamentation seems to show diferent states of wart-isolation ... difficult.

amateur-documentation is a nice understatement ;-)
thanks for your answers!
@ Nicolas
I am definitely not sure that all hairs did not exceed 800 µm, but the ones i measured at the edge of the cups did not...
@ Dirk
The apos on the right picture were very jung and small, maybe thats why the hairs seem to be different?
Otherwise, a different species could be a good idea, i am therefore just as undecided as with the hair - that's what i mean with „amateur" ... ;)
Scutellinia crinita seems to be the best candidate for my collection (or at least a part of it), but i cannot reach it in the keys. I try it backwards with my german Schumacher key:
37b) Ascosporen 16,6 - 21,2 x 11,1 - 13,8 µm:
S. crinita (Bull.: Fr.) Lamb.
-> my collection: 19–21(22)x(12)13–14(15) ?m - seems to be o.k.
35b) Ascosporen deutlich skulpturiert mit Warzen und gewundenen Graten 0,2 - 0,8 µm breit,
bei einer Höhe von 0, - 0,6 µm, Ascosporen mit abgerundeten Enden ............................ 37
-> my collection: o.k.
34b) Ascosporenskulptur im Lichtmikroskop klar erkennbar .................................... 35
-> my collection: i don't know wether that means „clearly recognizable" in water or in colorant -
if in colorant „o.k.", if in water: „not o.k."
29b) Ascosporen Skulptur mit Warzen und Graten 0,2 - 1,4 µm breit und bis 1,3 µm hoch ....... 34
-> my collection: warts small < 0,5 ?m, o.k.
28b) Ascosporen ellipsoid bis breit ellipsoid, weniger als 27,5 µm lang ..................... 29
-> my collection: o.k.
27a) Apothecien mit an der Basis mehrfach gegabelten Haaren, einige Haare über 1000 µm lang ......................................................................................... 28
-> my collection: i cannot exclude Hairs > 800 µm, maybe o.k.
21b) Ascosporen, deren Wand sich beim Erwärmen in Baumwollblau nicht ablöst, Randhaare
gerade, in der Länge zwischen 200 - 3000 (!) µm ...................................................... 27
-> my collection: o.k.
--------
addition:
Point 10 / 16 are the parts of the key i have alway problems with, is there a mesh or warts?
-------
Backwards it works with some smaller doubt, but without a species in mind, i often miss a target
while following the keys in the right direction, and i dont know why.
I'll try the other keys backwards an i hope you are not too bored with my long "work"...
I forgot to mention that in a German forum there was also a hint to S. crinita, but i had doubts because i had not shown all the characteristics as i did it here. However, it seems that the species is really S. crinita.
Many thanks and best regards
Klaas
not that I could help you much with the Scutellinia problem but are you sure that those small, brownish apothecia on the last macro photo of plate 1/5 belong to S. crucipila (as indicated by the arrows)? To me it looks more like a Tricharina or something similar. But I might be wrong of course so sorry if I caused any erroneous confusion!
Best wishes,
Gernot
Beste Grüße
Uwe
i'm definitely not sure with S. crucipila, but the hairs seemed to be quite similar to this. But the color fits not really good...
The fruitbodies were unripe, < 1mm, only some paraphyses and many hairs.
I will try to attach two pictures, maybe it works.
If i compare with my own findings of Leucoscypha/Pustularia, there is different base at the hairs, or am i wrong?
Maybe this was L. semi-immersa, it was too long ago, so i can't verify it anymore:
http://taunuspilz.de/coppermine/albums/ftp_ul/2011_09_17/Leucoscypha_semiimmersa.jpg
Another finding of a Leucoscypha/Pustularia to compare the hairs:
http://taunuspilz.de/coppermine/albums/ftp_ul/2013_11_17/2013_11_17_Pustularia_patavina-3.jpg
For me they seem quite different, or?
But i can't proof it, the fruitbodies don't live anymore, so i'll remove the arrows or replace them with an interrogation mark in my final version.
I'm really uncertain with fungi...
Thanks a lot and best regards
Klaas
