long-necked anamorph embedded in wood
Ethan Crenson, 01-05-2024 23:22
Hi all,

Found late last week in a New York City park. This is on a branch of hardwood. It is an anamorph with a thick and relatively long neck protruding from the bark. The third photo shows a section through one of the fruiting bodies showing conidiospores developing in a flattened chamber embedded in the wood which travel up the neck through a rather broad channel to the apex of the neck. At the apex of each neck there is a white blob of amassed conidia.

Conidiospores:
Hyaline with oil droplets, mostly ellipsoid with rounded ends, smooth, aseptate. I see what I think are bud scars at one end of some of the conidiospores.
8.6-12.5 x 3.8-4.9µm
Q=2.0-3.0
N=33
Me=10.3 x 4.2µm

Does anyone recognize this?

Thank you in advance,

Ethan
