Yet another Scutellinia
Malcolm Greaves, 15-10-2012 21:03
Malcolm GreavesThis group were found on a recently felled conifer.
I have tried to be methodical but each find although they look so different in the wild look so similar under the scope and I keep coming back to the same place in the key.
Apothecia up to 4.5 mm with tufts of two types of dark small hairs at the margin
Ascus 260 x 21.5
Average of 10 spores 21.06 x 12.06 Q 1.75
Hairs max 720 x 32

Can anyone advise.
Thanks
Malcolm

Re : Yet another Scutellinia
Adio Mal,

It seems to me that is important to make sporogram if you want anything about Scutellinias.
Here, in my mind, we have a specimen of S. crinita (habitat, macro and spores), or we have a specimen of S. olivascens (hairs and spores), or we have a specimen of S. "scutellata complex" (base of hairs, pubescent margin)... etc.
It's very difficult to say anything.
This genus is difficult, very difficult and I think that's necessary to have a lot of data, in particular on sporal ornementation. It's necessary to have a sporogram or a lot of spores in asci with a easy recognized sporal ornementation.

Here, I'm unable to say something,
Amically,
Beñat

Re : Yet another Scutellinia
Adio Mal,

I don't know if I can explain this...
A sporogram is "ejection of spores on a little slide". It represents mature spores, natural ejection by maturity... It's necessary to put a slide on Scutellinias and wait some time to have a white projection on it...
When you have, you can put it in Cotton Blue and make photos. So, a lot of spores with a good view on sporal ornementation like the picture attached (Scutellinia torrentis),

Amically,
Beñat

Re : Yet another Scutellinia
When I got a lot of ejected spores together I had trouble getting more than one or two to show the ornamentation but here are a few which I hope show enough detail
