White dots on pine
Lepista Zacarias, 12-11-2021 00:03
Hi everybody,
A week ago in my fiels trip I noticed some small white dots (~1 mm in diameter) on the bark of a pine tree; This occurs at the Park in Monsanto, Lisboa, Portugal; I was convinced that it was a myxomycete emerging; I collected a sample and keep in moist habitat inside a transparent box at room temperature; Now, analyzing it I got the surprise of whatching at a ascomycota;
I create an observation at Biodiversity4all, where you can see details of the microscopy:
https://www.biodiversity4all.org/observations/100884210
For the smooth spores I got the following dimensions:
(17.2) 18.2 - 20.6 (21.3) × (10.2) 10.3 - 12.1 (12.6) µm
Q = (1.6) 1.63 - 1.8 (2.1) ; N = 23
Me = 19.2 × 11.1 µm ; Qe = 1.7
Any help for the identification? Thanks in advance,
zaca

Re : White dots on pine
Hi, zaca,

this looks like Propolis leonis to me. The spores are a bit short, maybe the material wasn't fully mature yet.

Best wishes,
Gernot

Re : White dots on pine
Bonjour Lepista,

I also found thie species on the French center west island of Ré lately , with , as mentionned by Gernot,  a bit larger spores

After a correspondance with Zotto who had found it years before in Vendée (also the French center atlantic coast and with a submediterranean climate) , it seems that this species might strictly be found along the atlantic coast.
Has it been found elsewhere? Is it a rare or an overlooked species ?

Amitiés Michel

Hi, Michel,

I have a plentiful collection from Carinthia (southern Austria) on bark of Pinus sylvestris (9.IV.2016, included in Zotto's folder here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5SeyOEkxxZhV3ZHaDRmOURQV0U?resourcekey=0-H3sP23gohcExjSSEiuHaxA)

Best wishes,
Gernot

Ah merci Gernot , interesting !

A bit far away to consider your colletcion site as an extension of the atlantic coast -:)

I can see that Enrique also found it, in Spain I suppose

Re : White dots on pine
My Dears Gernot, Michel and Zotto, who was contacted by Michel,
Many thanks for your replies and putting for me aware of this species and of its characteristics.
The important thingis that we can enjoy these little fungi that all of us like to study. Since, after your veredict, I have no doubt about the species, I will keep my specimen a bit more time waiting to the point where I will be able to observe the spores conveniently, because those that I observed were, mostly, still immature. If any difference will be seen I will report it here.
If the any of the material of this observation will be valuable to someone, please let me know, that I will be glad to share it.
I am delighted to have contacted you and appreciate your work and enthusiasm; Thanks again; Best regards,
zaca
