Asco on Equisetum
Chris Yeates, 06-04-2012 01:55
Chris YeatesSome years ago I collected a fungus on Equisetum palustre. Based on spore measurements in Ellis and Ellis I tentatively named it Mycosphaerella equiseti (Fuckel) Schröter. Since then and having read the paper Nordic equiseticolous Pyrenomycetes by Lennart and Kerstin Holm, in Nordic Journal of Botany (1) pp. 109-119, I suspect this may be their unnamed "Didymella sp." (see the PDF attachment); the characteristic spore shape is very similar, and does not match the Mycosphaerella; the spores of my collection are somewhat larger than their dimensions, but they do talk of their material being "limited".

I would be interested if anyone has any comments on this.

Amitiés

Chris

Yes, you have probably  found the Didymella sp. of L. Holm, surely a equiseticolous Didymella.

Re : Asco on Equisetum
Thanks for comments/questions Alain and Yan.
Spore measurements can be deduced from the scale bar, the spores were hyaline; I do not have measurements of pseudothecia or asci. I am hoping that I have retained material from the original collection which I can re-examine.
Yesterday (6th) I have collected more dead Equisetum palustre stems from the same area so perhaps I will have more material of this fungus . . . .
