Ascobolus from soil

Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of the apothecium. It was only one found, during a seminar, on the soil in a deciduous forest (Carpinus, Castanea, Quercus, Prunus avium u.a.) near Sulzbach am Taunus (Germany, Hessen).

At first glance I thought of a small Peziza (apothecium about 1 cm large), but the spores are clearly an Ascobolus.

Can somebody say more than the species only with my micro-fotos?

Best regards, Lothar

Hello Lothar,

I think it should be A. viridis.
Best regards, Zuzana

Hi Zuzana,

this was my first thought also - thank you very much!

In the internet I found pictures labelled viridis with a different ornament - but likely they are wrong.

Best regards!

Lothar

Re : Ascobolus from soil
The ornament in Ascobolus can be somewhat variable, but I think the combination of growth on soil and fusoid spores of this size are typical for A. viridis.
Hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Hi all,
yes, the ornamentation can be already very variable, here a few older spores photos and three apothecies.
Greetings Peter.

Hallo Lothar,
am Fundort warst du schon 'mal mit Micha und meiner Wenigkeit.

Hi Zuzana, hallo Peter,

thank you very much!

more than 20 years ago (my dissertation) I once thought to know A. viridis, but this is long ago ...

@Peter: ja, wir müssen auch mal wieder zusammen auf Exkursion gehen :-)

Best regards to both of you,

Lothar
