Discostroma corticola
William de Jong, 23-12-2021 19:16
Hi everyone

A few days ago I found this ascomycete on a dead, but still attached, Rubus branch (The Netherlands). Asci J+, in Melzers a blue apical ring. 8 spores per ascus. Varying from 1 to 3 septate. 3-septate hyaline spores: 16,2-19,2(-19,4)x(5,5-)6,3-7,3(-7,4) µm; average 17,8x6,8; Q=2,64 (n=11). Conidia without appendage, 3-septate, 3 cells brown, 1 end cel hyaline: (13,3-)13,7-15,3(-15,4)x(5,1-)5,4-6,5(-6,9) µm; average 14,5x6,0; Q=2,43 (n=10).

The perfect as well as the imperfect spores perfectly fit the description of Discostroma corticola (Seimatosporium/Sporocadus lichenicola) in Brockman (1976), Sydowia 28 (https://www.zobodat.at/pdf/Sydowia_28_0275-0338.pdf).
When using the key in Paulus B.C., Gadek P.A. & K.D. Hyde (2006), Sydowia 58, I end up with D. rubicola (Metasphaeria rubicola). (https://www.zobodat.at/pdf/Sydowia_58_0076-0090.pdf)
However, the sizes of the conidia don't match at all (22-30x9-10(-12) according to them). Also, there is not much to find about this D. rubicola. But most of all, D. corticola is not mentioned in this study..
Liu et al., Studies in Mycology (2019) 92: 287–415 mentions D. corticola as Sporocadus lichenicola, the ascospore sizes match my finding, however, the conidia don't match (18-25x5.5-8).

Any thoughts on this?

Kind regards,
William de Jong
