Pyrenomycete on Equisetum hyemale
Hans-Otto Baral, 01-09-2007 21:51
Hans-Otto BaralHas anybody an idea about the species or at least genus of this stromatic bitunicate pyrenomycete which grows on projecting dead culms of Equisetum hyemale? I compared Leptopeltis but my literature is very insuffucient.

HB 8607b, 19.8.07, Tübingen-Pfrondorf, Tiefenbach, Schützenhaus. Sp. *12-17 x 3.8-4.2 µm, hyaline, 1-septatem with thick indistinct gel sheath around spore.

Thanks!
Zotto

Salut Zotto,

Tu abandonnes les Hélotiales ? Peut-être Scirrhia castagnei ?

Salut Guy

yes, you are right! Thanks a lot. My collection fits to the description in Winter (Rabenhorst), I don´t have more recent literature. Do you have a pdf of the Holm paper on ascos on Equisetum?

pyrenomycetes I once believe can be identified, Helotiales often not :-(

Salut Zotto

Collected a lot of Scirrhia castagnei today in an impressive E. hyemale-population, as well as some other "usual companions" of this host. The mass of fungi on this substrate is exeptional!
There is much of Phaeosphaeria berlesei which obviousely competes with S. castagnei.
P. hiemalis is abundant if i identified it right by "nude eyes", and there seem to be some more pyreno- and discocarp ascoms!
I got to chek for Ijuhya and beleive to have seen something that might fit, but i am too tired now.
Dont know if i can take goot pictures of these fungi with my camera.

Kind Greetings
Erwin

Re:Pyrenomycete on Equisetum hyemale
Hi Erwin

I fear you need a front lens for these tiny ones. I am not familiar with these pyrenos, not "my group" really. :-)

Ijuhya may actually occur in masses, but mainly on the standing dry ded parts, very different from Stamnaria! On the culms fallen to the moist ground it disappears.

Re:Pyrenomycete on Equisetum hyemale
Hi Zotto

Today - no yesterday i collected only dry, dead upper parts of horsetail. Went to the site to control if my attempt to infect the host with Titaeospora (from Felberbach) some years ago at least was successful or not.
Since infection has failed i collected some other fungi, and may have the chance to check the collection with a front lens when visiting Christian Scheuer in Graz on Friday (Stamnaria-publikation)
I got no optical equipment at home - sorry! Will tell you later about observation of the collect.
Maybe you liked to get samples of special fungi on E. hyemale from my region, in this case please tell me which one.

Erwin

Re:Pyrenomycete on Equisetum hyemale
Hi Erwin

thanks, but it is presently the best not to send me anything which is non-orbiliaceous :-)

So you did not find Ijuhya? I think it needs only a 10x Bino or hand lens to see the crowded perithecia.
